Major Online Failure Affects Dozens Online Platforms and Mobile Apps
A widespread internet outage has disrupted dozens websites and mobile apps around the world, with users noting issues connecting to the web after problems at Amazon’s online infrastructure system.
The disrupted platforms encompass Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with several Amazon-operated services including its primary shopping site and the Ring doorbell device manufacturer.
In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted in addition to its branches the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were additional accounts of issues using the HMRC website on the start of the week. Additionally in Britain, several Ring device owners turned to social media to state their security devices were not working.
Just within Britain, accounts of disruptions on individual apps reached the many thousands for every service.
The company stated that the outage originated in the eastern region of the US at the cloud division, a unit that supplies essential web infrastructure for many businesses, who lease space on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the world’s largest web hosting system.
Soon after late night (PDT) in the United States (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “higher failure rates and delays” for AWS services in a zone on the east coast of the US. The widespread consequence seemed to hit platforms globally, with the Downdetector site showing issues with the corresponding services in multiple continents.
The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks internet outages, further indicated a rise in problems on Monday morning, with many of them located in Virginia, the site of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where the company stated the problems began.
