The Latest Mounts of Mayhem Update Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to Your World

The winter content update for the block-building phenomenon has landed — and it features the first new weapon introduced into the title since the heavy club made its debut. The spear is now available and it has the potential to alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you enjoy mayhem.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mayhem Mounts update also introduces a host of fresh elements and enhancements focused on riding animals in the game. That focus made the spear the perfect fit for this update, as the creators had long felt it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.

"From the outset, we understood that we aimed for a fresh armament that would increase combat distance, and we designed it specifically for mounted combat," noted a lead developer. "We tried out a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both handled superbly when we tested our prototypes and also looked good for the use case."

If you're wondering whether mounted combat means you can charge at your allies on steeds, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an combat move ideally crafted for it.

"Mounted lance combat] is a major functions for the spear, and it's so much fun," the lead adds. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the thrust, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and get increased harm [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] perfect for knightly combat."

Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures

The wild enjoyment can extend beyond there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are very late, [spears are] perfect for strapping on the elytra and flying forth and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she suggests.

In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now possible, and it deserves to be an Olympic sport right away.

Another significant inclusion in this new update is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is modeled after the nautilus shells we've all been collecting for years, can be tamed and ridden for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it move you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also preserve your air supply, so there's no need to return to the surface for a breath.

The other inclusions are primarily things that want to kill you, as is the way of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a undead nautilus spawning in the water, frequently with a Drowned on its back. If you manage to take care of the Drowned, though, you can tame the zombie Nautilus — or the regular one, for that matter — with a spiky fish.

"We've been thinking about this challenge on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the perfect moment to also bring in something for aquatic environments," the lead elaborates. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a several proposals for underwater mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus design sketches looked striking, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."

She also points out that there are actually two different types of zombie Nautilus: standard and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] add variety to what you discover underwater."

Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks

Further inclusions include the Parched, desert-exclusive skeletons that can withstand the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you end up in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. Camel husks have an excellent design that sees their ribs poking out. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying zombie on their back.

The remaining updates on the drop's list are refinements, including some highly requested adjustments to equestrian travel. Now, you can cross bodies of water while atop a horse. Also, netherite horse armor is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the ultimate protection it is worthy of.

A Fittingly Chaotic Finale

In summary, the final game drop of the year is a solid offering. The spear alone — and the mayhem it enables — would have felt like a considerable upgrade. Throw in the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.

The Mayhem Mounts update is available for all major editions of Minecraft.
